„Do you want to allow the following program to make changes to this computer?“

„Do you want to allow the following program to make changes to this computer?“

This message is a classic Windows message (not an error message), which is always displayed when (according to Windows) unsafe or dangerous file types are to be opened. As a user you have the possibility to freely define how your own security settings are defined on your computer. If you are the administrator of your computer, you can easily change the settings and disable this message.

Workstation computer – user account control

Anyone who gets this message displayed on a workstation computer, for example in their own company, will hardly have a chance to change the security policies under Windows 10 on their own. In this case, the system administrator or the company’s technical department should be contacted. This is because no company wants to risk users installing malware on the computer, if necessary, through ill-considered behavior. These user account settings ensure that the normal user is not allowed to make any changes at this point.

The message: „Do you want to allow that by… User Account Control“.

The message reads differently every now and then: „Do you want to allow changes to be made to your PC by this app from an unknown publisher?“ is a similar message, for example, but it indicates a similar setting.

Ultimately, it’s about customizing User Account Control on Windows 10. This so-called UAC message is a built-in security mechanism on Windows that came into being when Windows 8.1 was upgraded to Windows 10. But how to disable this annoying file security warning on Windows 10?

Turn off the message „Do you want to allow the following program to make changes to this computer?“

Here’s how to do it:

  1. Click on „Start“ or the flag icon in Windows 10.
  2. Go to the „Control Panel“ under Windows by typing the term directly or using Cortana for it
  3. In the Control Panel area, change the display (top right) from large icons to small icons
  4. Click on User Accounts
  5. Click on „Change user account control settings“.
  6. Attention: At this point, the Windows message described earlier should appear again directly. Therefore, confirm with pleasure, so that the window behind it can be opened
  7. Select notifications about changes on the computer: Please consider the slider here. By default, this is set to the second level from the top. Meaning: only notify when apps make changes to the computer (default). However, this is always the case, for example, when you want to install a new program or app. Logically, the message is therefore also displayed
  8. Set the slider all the way down: Never notify in the following situations: Apps trying to install software or make changes to the computer.
  9. Click „OK
  10. If necessary, restart the computer once for the changes to take effect

From now on, you will not see this message when you try to open a program (.exe) or install a new tool on your computer. Don’t be put off by the „not recommended“ notice. Of course, this setting is not recommended, because it offers the least possible protection (everything is opened without asking). However, if you are reasonably confident using Windows 10, selecting this option is definitely advisable.

What you should not do

If you don’t know your way around or just need some quick help, avoid interfering with the registry. Do not change your Internet options, keep all Regedit settings as they are. If possible, try not to make any changes in the „Services -> Group Policies“ section. Certainly, „.exe“ could be allowed here in principle. However, the cause of this message is usually in another area. If possible, try to prevent execution via the command prompt and do not change any file types.
